Five questions to ask the school about your child’s day
How to hear more from a teacher than “all fine”: five calm questions about the setting and communication — and how to write down the answers.
Ask “How was the day?” and a teacher at school or nursery will most likely say “fine” or “it was hard”. To understand what actually helps and what gets in the way, you need more specific questions. Here are five — calm ones, without judging.
One habit: in your next conversation, ask one or two questions from the list
Not all at once: a conversation should not turn into an interrogation. One or two questions at a time, the rest next time.
- What went well today, or this week?
Start with the good. Small successes are easy to lose, and later they are exactly what you want to remember. - When it was hard, what happened right before?
Place, noise, a change of activity, waiting, other children. Not “why”, but “what came before”. - How does my child show they need help or a break?
A gesture, a word, a look, moving away. Signals at school and at home can differ. - What helps them calm down here?
A quiet place, an object, certain words, time. It may be useful at home too. - What works at home that would be useful for you to know?
An invitation to share: you share yours, the teacher shares theirs.
How to write down the answer
Right after the conversation, briefly and with the date. In the teacher’s words rather than your retelling, if you can:
6 November, teacher: “It was loud at break, he went to the corner with a book and came back by himself after ten minutes.” (A fictional family.)
What you share in return is up to you
Tell them what helps at home. You do not have to pass on health information, reports or diagnoses: what to tell, and to whom, is your decision.
Where this is easy to do
You can write the answers in an ordinary notebook. In Look How Far you can invite a teacher or specialist, and they add notes in their own language — you read them in the shared History in yours. They do not see your conversations, photos or documents. How it works for relatives and specialists. It is in a closed pilot on Android.
This note is about keeping records, not medical advice. Questions about health and treatment belong with a doctor.
